A Film Industry Tribute to Ray Chan

On Tuesday 23rd April, our dear colleague and friend Ray Chan sadly passed away having suffered a stroke.

One of the most energetic and passionate characters to grace the film industry; so many of us have been fortunate enough to experience Ray's dedication, creativity and endless enthusiasm over the last three decades.

It doesn't seem conceivable that someone so dynamic can be taken so soon, and so suddenly.

The movie world has truly lost one of it's main characters.

This page has been set up for us all to pay tribute to Ray - and his family has proposed the Stroke Association in the hope that more lives can be saved by greater awareness.  Please give as much or as little as as you can afford, and feel free to leave a message of condolence.

There will be a private burial service for close family, but a London memorial service is in the process of being arranged, and further details will be shared on this page in due course.

Thoughts

What a huge shock to this industry. Ray was an inspiration and altogether one of the great guys. A brilliant boss who nurtured his team to bring out the best in everyone. Ray offered me my first Standby Art Director role which continued for a decade. I'll never forget Ray and I sticking autumn leaves to a Honda 50cc scooter at 10pm for shooting the next day, laughing away at how ridiculous it was and how this could only happen in the film industry! He was a pleasure to be around and will be missed by so many, Sleep well RC x

Last week came the shocking news that we had lost Ray. An unbelievably talented whirlwind of a man who's kindness and humour kept us going on the mad movie rides we enjoyed together, always running along side him to keep up. My movie mother hen for the last 14 years, he kept his little chicks under his protective wing and always made sure we were productive, creative and happy. He created a family and I'm so proud to have been part of that, a legacy that we can take comfort in. I'll miss him charging along the corridor shouting morning greetings to us all in his deep northern voice. Using his nicknames he created for us whether we liked them or not, all done with humour and affection, fueled by the strongest coffee ever. . Watching him slip effortlessly into the role of production designer was a joy, he absolutely nailed it and was enjoying himself so much. Our Friday catch up parties where he made sure everyone stopped work and grabbed a drink to chat and relax, such a nice touch and so very Ray. We will never get to the bottom of the meat thief incident - my dog trotted out of his office one lunchtime with a huge piece of meat lovingly wrapped in tin foil. I panicked, grabbed it off the dog and threw it in the bin ( its was very chewed), knowing it must have been one of his lovingly created dinners. He never said anything, I'm hoping he got a craft lunch that day! The devastating news that he has left us and his much loved family has left us all in shock. Thankyou Lindsay, Cas and Seb for sharing him with us, he always talked about you so so proudly. Thankyou Ray, for everything

I still remember the first time I met Ray, a very long time ago one day after school. I’d heard a lot about him, heard how he worked on big movies in America. Naturally I felt a bit nervous, was trying to think what I would say. As soon as he said hello I knew I needn’t have worried. He gave me a firm handshake with a cheeky smile and asked how I was. He was easy to talk to, one of the few parents who would talk to you like an adult. He had an amazing ability to make everyone feel relaxed and excited all at the same time! When Cas moved up to London, I was determined to match his pace, prove that I was up to a bit of coordinating with him. I could tell he quite liked that. Within a few hours we had everything carried and neatly organised on the fourth floor. It was great fun sorting things out with him. That evening, he ordered everyone pizza and made it feel like home, as though we’d been there forever. The day of Cas and Dani’s wedding, we were setting up the venue together. He’d had personalise decorations made. I could tell he was determined to make the day extra special in any way possible. This was the day I truly saw, he didn’t miss a trick. When he was around there was always something interesting happening. Hearing about his story growing up gave me a lot of inspiration. Knowing someone had made it, wasn’t afraid to push boundaries and hadn’t settled for second best. From spending time with Ray, I think that’s how I’d sum him up. He had a knack for dreaming up the unthinkable and then making it come true. He adored everyone around him as much as they adored him. It’s not possible to put into words how much he will be missed. Thank you Ray ❤️
